Which database versions are supported?
Oracle Database 19c, 21c, 23ai and 26ai, including RAC and Data Guard; 12.2 and 18c connect with some screens limited. PostgreSQL 13 to 18. MySQL 8.0, 8.4 LTS and 9.x (5.7 and MariaDB are not supported). ClickHouse 24.8 and later.
Do I need to install anything on the database server?
No. LAB256 is agentless: it connects over JDBC directly to your Oracle, PostgreSQL, MySQL or ClickHouse database, and a read-only user is enough to monitor. The impact on the server is a few light queries against the performance views, at the interval you choose.
How does the trial period work?
The trial offers 30 days with all features enabled and unlimited connections. No credit card required.
What PostgreSQL features are supported?
Active sessions and what they wait on, query performance via pg_stat_statements, locks and blocking chains, vacuum and bloat, transaction ID age, replication, WAL and replication slots, storage and custom alerts.
What privileges are required?
To monitor: on Oracle, read access to the dictionary (SELECT ANY DICTIONARY, SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE) and EXECUTE on DBMS_METADATA to read DDL; on PostgreSQL, the pg_monitor role and pg_stat_statements; on MySQL, PROCESS, REPLICATION CLIENT and read access to performance_schema and a few tables of the mysql schema; on ClickHouse, read access to the system tables. LAB256 shows a ready-made script for a dedicated monitoring user. Actions such as ending a session need their own privilege, and an action the user cannot take is dimmed with the reason.
Does LAB256 change anything in my database?
Only when you confirm it. Monitoring only reads. Each action (cancel a statement, add a datafile, rebuild an index, gather statistics, fix a plan, create an index) opens a confirmation that shows the exact statement, and that statement is what runs and what goes into the journal. A connection marked read-only runs nothing, and connections tagged production start that way.
Where is data stored?
What LAB256 reads from your databases is stored on your computer, in a history file encrypted at rest; SQL text only if you switch it on. What the application sends to us is the licence check, the update check and, unless you turn it off, usage data. Never database contents, SQL, results or connection names. The Security page lists it field by field.
Does it work with cloud databases?
Yes. LAB256 works with any database it can reach over the network: on-premises, Oracle Cloud, AWS RDS, Azure Database, Google Cloud SQL and other managed services, as long as the monitoring user can read the views LAB256 queries.
What does LAB256 show for ClickHouse?
What runs now and what ran (per query, from the query log), parts, merges, mutations and replicas, errors, the server's metrics and its own dashboards, and users and privileges. The time bar reads the history ClickHouse keeps in its system tables. What ClickHouse does not have, such as an SGA or sampled ASH, is dimmed in the menu with the reason. Requires ClickHouse 24.8 or later.
How does it compare to Oracle Enterprise Manager?
LAB256 complements OEM: 1-second resolution between the 15-minute AWR snapshots, a local history you can scrub through on every screen, and nothing installed on the server. It also monitors PostgreSQL, which OEM does not. The comparison table sits just above the pricing.
Does it support monitoring multiple databases?
